Day 3 - May 21/17 at Neys Provincial Park, between Marathon and Terrace Bay, North Shore of Lake Superior, just on shore from Pic Island (made famous by Lawren Harris!!; we can see the tip of the island from our beach-front campsite!!!)
Once again, this blog post is being published tomorrow when we have cell service or WIFI, as we have no service here at the park.
We had a somewhat restless night last night, and didn’t get up until 8am!! Had “Huevos Agawa Bay(vos)” for breakfast. Got underway at 10:20am. First stop was a scenic outlook over Agawa Bay - with special lighting effects through mostly overcast skies! (photo)
Then on to Wawa by 11:30 - where we got ‘goosed’ by the old Wawa Goose (erected in 1963) (photo) that is to be replaced this year on July 1st - we will get to stop and see the new goose in September on our return trip home). Got groceries and gas, and then stopped at Timmie’s for a coffee and WIFI access - only to arrive there right after a high school football team bus from Thunder Bay that had stopped for lunch. Fully an half hour later or more, we had our coffee and donut!! Spent about 1&1/2 hours in total updating the blog, catching up on email, etc.
Left Wawa in the rain. It rained off and on all afternoon and on into the evening. Saw a young moose in a marsh beside the highway after entering Obatanga Provincial Park, but no photo op.
Stopped at Depew River picnic area for lunch at about 2:30 (photo). (Michael remembered stopping there on his 2014 sabbatical motopilgrimage);
At 3:30 stopped in White River to see the monument commemorating of the beginnings of Winnie-the-Pooh (photo).
Drove by the huge Barrick Mines operation south of Marathon.(photo).
Gassed up in Marathon - Gas Buddy on phone saved us $.09/litre!!

At 9:40pm, as we begin to get ready for bed, it is still quite light out. We have been thinking that it has been lighter later each night, and are wondering if this is because we are considerably further north already (43rd parallel in London, and the 49th parallel here - a difference of 6 degrees)
Nancy remember the "red flag" when they were blasting the road?
ReplyDeleteHave to say your camp site at Neys Prov. Park looks a little bleak... can't see any beach... hope the weather improves...
Would be interested in hearing how many miles you are doing a day..
Wow. Ted and I last saw the Wawa goose in our 1971 cross-country trip. I'm sorry to learn they are replacing it.
ReplyDeleteThe old goose is looking much the worse for wear. We'll check out the new goose on our return trip and let you know how it compares.
